Die Tatsache das Apple sich inzwischen verstärkt für die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen zur Erstellung von Apps und dem allgemeinen Erlernen von Programmiersprachen einsetzt, ist inzwischen hinlänglich bekannt. Nun hat man eine neue Aktion gestartet, bei der man diese Kompetenz an der Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired auch an sehbehinderte Schüler vermitteln möchte. Der Kurs basiert auf Apples "Everyone Can Code"-Curriculum und wurde zum ersten Mal für Blinde und sehbehinderte Menschen angeboten, wie Austin Satesman von Open Source (via MacStories) berichtet. Dabei setzt Apple vor allem auf das in iOS enthaltene VoiceOver-Feature, mit dem die Schüler Aufgaben in Apples Swift Playgrounds App (kostenlos im AppStore) bearbeiten konnten.
Vicki Davidson, ihres Zeichens Technologie-Lehrerin an der Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired wird mit den Worten zitiert:
"We see this as a way to get them interested in coding and realize this could open job opportunities. Apple has opened up a whole new world for kids by giving them instant access to information and research, and now coding."
Sarah Herrlinger, Apples Director of Accessibility ergänzt:
"When we said everyone should be able to code, we really meant everyone. Hopefully these kids will leave this session and continue coding for a long time. Maybe it can inspire where their careers can go."
